Could Texas Take the Solar Lead?  Posted on Apr 22, 2022

Texas is a powerhouse in distributed PV, and could become the number one state in the U.S., especially depending on how California’s NEM-3 proceeding turns out. In Q1 to Q3 of 2021, distributed PV in Texas grew by 23% compared to California’s 14% growth rate.

At RE+ Texas, new and emerging companies in roofing, home security, software, drones, ecommerce, engineering and financing exhibited services focused on Texas' growing, distributed PV market.  Breakout panels discussed the nuts and bults of market reform in Texas.  A mixed-grid/DER approach is quickly emerging in Texas focused on learning from the past to create a more resilient Texas grid with a large mix of distributed energy resources.

The cleantech industry should be watching Texas -- especially as California, the largest distributed PV market in the United States, proposes revisions to its net metering that would reduce compensation for distributed PV and incentivize electrification and energy storage.
